No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path. – Gautama Buddha
Review by Josh Ge Dark Art Society resident art historian
One of the many things I love about art, is not only how it can spark emotions, but even remind us of a feeling or experience we may have forgotten. During one of my early courses in art history, we were learning about expressionism and a piece entitled “Woman with Dead Child” by Kathe Kollwitz appeared on the screen in front of us. It was not only stunning in the execution of the etching, stylization, and figures, but also the juxtaposition of the pained face of the mother and the serene and delicate face of the child. It was one of the first times I felt the phrase “painfully beautiful” when looking at a work of art. It was absolutely saturated with emotion and holds it even today. I believe all works of art have emotion that connects with the viewer in some way—and this connection keeps me continually inspired by art—but it wasn’t until seeing this new sculpture by 陳彦廷 that I felt this similar “so beautiful it hurts” feeling. The pose, expression, and even the color of nature that appears to be draining from the figure, only to leave what looks like red clay (which is created by weathering and decomposition).
Congrats.
